About The 2000 Gold Dollar Coin
The U.S. Mint minted nearly 1.3 billion one-dollar coins in Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, and West Point mints.
The 2000 gold dollar (also known as the 2000 Sacagawea dollar) is 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, and 2% nickel. The added manganese gives the coin its golden color. There are circulation-, special-, and proof-strike versions of the coin.20-22 Prooflike circulation-strike versions and cameo and ultra/deep cameo proof versions also exist.20-22
2000 gold dollars in circulated condition are worth $1, but in uncirculated condition they sell for as much as $5,600.1-4 Prooflike versions are worth between $50 and $145.5-6 Special-strikes range in value from approximately $452 to $4,500.13-14 Proof coins sell for $11 to $53 and up.15-16 Other versions of the coin are worth between $3,200 and $242,000.7-12

The 2000 Gold Dollar Value
Circulation strikes from Philadelphia and Denver are comparable in value until the mint-state grades.
Higher mint-state grades from Denver are worth more than double those from Philadelphia.
By far, the most valuable version is the error coin known as the “mule.” These range from $53,000 to $242,000 and up.
The Cheerios version is the second most valuable. These are worth approximately $3,200 to $11,000 and up.
The Millennium Sets version from Denver is the third most valuable, ranging from $16 to $10,000.
An N/A for a value below indicates no publicly known examples of that version of the 2000 gold dollar with that grade, or no value information (or not enough) exists for it yet.
Melt Value
The coins melt value is approximately negligible for the mixed alloy versions. The melt value will fluctuate with the market.

What Makes A 2000 Gold Dollar Valuable?
Grading, rarity, strike types, special designations, die varieties, and errors add to the value of this coin.
Let’s start with grading.
Grading
For circulation-strike 2000 gold dollars, it is not until the mid-to-upper mint-state grades that you will see anything above its face value.
Special-strike coins range in grade from SP 60 to SP 70. They range in value from $452 to the thousands.
Proof-strike coins range in grade from 60 to 70. They start at $3 and reach over $50.
Rarity
The Mint minted 2000 gold dollars approximately 1,290,189,443 times across all of its versions. Please see the following list for the breakdown for each version:
- 2000-P: 767,140,000 minted in Philadelphia1-2
- 2000-P Cheerios: 5,500 minted in Philadelphia7-8
- 2000-P SAC $1 w/ State 25C Obverse: part of 2000-P mintage11-12
- 2000-D: 518,916,000 minted in Denver3-4
- 2000-D Millennium Set: 75,000 minted in Denver9-10
- 2000-S Proof: 4,047,904 minted in San Francisco15-16
- 2000-P Goodacre Presentation: 5,000 minted in Philadelphia13-14
- 2000-W Proof 22kt Gold: 39 minted in West Point17,22
There were 39 22-karat gold 2000 proof gold dollar coins struck. However, 27 of them were soon melted. Today, the remaining 12 22-karat gold coins reside at Fort Knox.17 These are not available on the open market.
The 2000-P SAC $1 w/ State 25C Obverse gold dollar is by far the rarest and the most valuable version.
With a low mintage of around 5 thousand, the Cheerio and the Goodacre Presentation versions are also rare, reflecting their value.
With over a billion minted, the circulation strikes from both Philadelphia and Denver are not rare coins.
Mint Marks
Thia coin has 4 mint marks:
- “P” for coins minted in Philadelphia1-2
- “D” for coins minted in Denver3-4
- “S” only proof versions were minted in San Francisco15-16
- “W” for West Point, which minted the 22-karat gold proofs17,22
The “Mule” error and the Cheerios version with the “P” mint mark from Philadelphia are the most valuable. For circulation-strike mint-state grades, those from Denver are the most valuable.
Strike Types
The 2000 gold dollar has 3 strike types: circulation, special, and proof.20-22
The special-strike coins were struck for the coin’s obverse designer, Glenna Goodacre.13-14
She requested that her $5,000 payment be made in gold dollar coins.13-14 The U.S. Mint agreed and presented her with 5,000 specially struck coins.
These 5,000 coins are special strikes and are known as the Goodacre Presentation. They have a burnished finish and a satin appearance.
The 2000 proof gold dollars are of exceptional quality and are mainly found in deep cameo versions.
Design Variations
This coin has no design variations.
Special Designations
This coin has 1 designation: prooflike.5-6
This designation is given to circulation-strike coins that exhibit some qualities you would find in a proof-strike coin.
These are usually the result of the first strikes from a new die pair.
Error Coins
The most famous 2000 gold dollar errors are the rare and unique “mule” errors.
The 2000-P SAC $1 w/ State 25C Obverse were the first ever authenticated mint mule error coins.11-12,30
A mule error refers to a type of error where 2 sides from 2 different coins (that should never be together) are struck on one single coin.
In the case of the 2000-P SAC $1 w/State 25C Obverse mule error, the reverse side of the Sacagawea dollar featuring Thomas D. Roger Sr.’s eagle is on the same coin as the obverse side of the 50-states Washington Quarter.11-12,30
It is believed that there are under approximately 20 of these mule errors in existence, which makes them incredibly rare.11-12,30
These are the most valuable versions of the 2000 gold dollar. They start in the tens of thousands and reach up to the hundreds of thousands.
A 2000-D SAC $1 w/ South Carolina Reverse gold dollar reaches over $60,000.19,23,28
Die Varieties
Some notable die varieties for the 2000 gold dollar are:24
- 2000-P Cheerios regular reverse (circulation-strike reverse)
- 2000-P Cheerios prototype reverse (detailed feathers, 12 tail feathers)
- 2000-P Speared Eagle (die gouges)
- 2000-D Millennium Set (special finished)
These varieties increase the coin’s value as they are desirable collector’s items.
Composition
The 2000 gold dollar is a copper core and clad with 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, and 2% nickel.1-4
The Cheerios version is, again, a copper core but clad with 77% copper, 12% zinc, and 1% other.
How Do You Know If You Have A Valuable 2000 Gold Dollar?
The best way to know if you have a valuable coin and to get that value out of it is to have it professionally certified.
However, you can look for many elements to get you started in determining what coin you have.
Let’s start with grading.
Grading
If you are looking to complete a set, then the 2000 gold dollar up to the mid-mint-state grade is an affordable option.
If you are looking for a valuable coin, you should choose one in the upper mint-state range. These coins reach into the thousands.
Look for a coin that has:
- No signs of wear
- Few scratches or marks
- Good strike quality
- Nice luster
Mint Marks
You will find the mint mark on the obverse side of your 2000 gold dollar.
Look on the right-hand side for the year, “2000.” Underneath is the mint mark’s location.
There will be a “P” for the coins from Philadelphia. A “D” is for those coins from the Denver. All proof-strike versions will have an “S,” as they came from San Francisco.
The remaining 22-karat gold Sacagawea dollars are kept at Fort Knox. They have a “W” mint mark for the West Point Mint.
Strike Types
For the special-strike Goodacre Presentation gold dollars, you first want to look for a burnished finish rather than the normal bright gold.
They also have a satin finish, so they will look more glossy than reflective, as you find in other high-quality coins.
They will be of exceptional quality with clear details, but they will not have a cameo contrast.
All the Goodacre Presentation coins have been certified by a professional and come in a clear plastic holder.
So, ensure any 2000 special-strike gold dollar you’re considering buying has this holder and certificate of authenticity.
For proof-strike versions, you will also see coins of exceptional quality.
Cameo versions will have a contrast between the field’s mirroring and the device’s frosting (such as Sacagawea).
The deep/ultra cameo versions show even more mirroring on the fields and a heavier frosting on the devices.
Design Variations
This coin has no design variations.
Special Designations
For the prooflike 2000 gold dollar coins, you need to remember that these are circulation-strike coins.
They will be of good quality, well-struck, and show reflectivity on both sides of the coin, but they will not have any of the other qualities of proof coins.
Error Coins
The famous “mule” errors are, thankfully, easy to tell from just looking at your coin.
For the 2000-P SAC $1 w/State 25C Obverse error coin, you will need to check both sides of your coin. The reverse will show the standard soaring eagle of the 2000 gold dollar.11-12
The key indicator is the obverse side. This error coin will feature Washington’s profile, as seen on the Washington quarters.
This is a very valuable error coin that can reach several hundred thousands of dollars on the market.
For the 2000-D SAC $1 w/ South Carolina Reverse, again, you will need to check both sides of your coin.19,28
The obverse side will feature the standard portrait of Sacagawea as per regular 2000 gold dollars.
Now, for this error, the reverse side is important. It features the South Carolina reverse of the Washington quarter 50-states series.
The outline of South Carolina is in the center of this reverse side. Within the state is “The Palmetto State” and one star.
A palmetto tree is to the right, and a Carolina wren resting on yellow jessamine flowers is to the left.
Circling the rim at the top is “South Carolina” with “1778” underneath. At the bottom, “2000” and underneath “E Pluribus Unum.”
This is another valuable error coin that is worth tens of thousands of dollars.
Die Varieties
Here are some tips to help you identify some of the die varieties for the 2000 Sacagawea gold dollar:
2000-P Cheerios – Regular Reverse
For this variety, it is worth familiarizing yourself with the different eagles found on the reverse side of the coin.24
Most Cheerio gold dollars feature the “prototype” reverse, which shows very detailed feathers on the eagle.
For this reverse, you want to check the eagle’s feathers. Look for more smooth tail feathers without much detail. These will be the same as regular circulation-strike coins.
There are not many of the 2000 regular reverse Cheerio gold dollars, so they are valuable.
2000-P Cheerios – Prototype Reverse
To determine if you have a prototype coin, look at your coin’s reverse side.24
The tail feathers show much more detail. Each feather will have a series of lines down them.
The feathers of the wings and on the eagle’s chest will also have this increased detail.
These are desired coins and, thus, more valuable.
2000-P Speared Eagle
For this variety, look at the reverse side of your coin.24 You may want to use a loupe or some form of magnification.
Looking just below the eagle’s breast, you should see 2 distinct die gouges. The first one runs diagonally up into the center of the eagle’s chest, and the second die gouge comes out just above and ends at the base of the wing.
This gives the appearance that the eagle has a spear through its chest. Hence, the name.
2000-D Millennium Set
The 2000 gold dollar millennium sets were struck using special dies and specially polished planchets.24
So, look for brilliant coins that have a prooflike appearance. They will be well-struck and have clear details.
Many exhibit a more burnished look than the usual brassy-gold color.
Most were presented in a plastic holder on a presentation card. You will want to have the coin still in the holder to get the most value.
Additional Information About The 2000 Gold Dollar
History
The 2000 gold dollar, also known as the Sacagawea dollar, has been minted since 2000 and is still minted to date.
Chosen by competition, the sculptor Glenna Goodacre won the design for the coin’s obverse side. Goodacre featured a portrait of the Shoshone Indian guide, Sacagawea, and her son.
Sacagawea, along with her husband, the Canadian trapper Toussaint Charbonneau, were guides for the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804 to 1806.31 The expedition crossed America from North Dakota to the Pacific Ocean.
Sacagawea was pregnant when the expedition commenced and gave birth to her first son, Jean-Baptiste, during the journey. This son is featured on the obverse side of the coin
Sacagawea was also a figurehead for the National American Woman Suffrage Association.
The U.S. Mint’s engraver, Thomas D. Rogers Sr, designed the coin’s reverse side.
A strong media marketing campaign was waged for the 2000 gold dollar. It featured both TV and print commercials.
The U.S. Mint even partnered with Walmart and General Mills for its marketing campaign.
Despite this heavy marketing campaign, unfortunately, this coin failed to be as popular as anticipated.

The Coin’s Obverse Side
The obverse side of the coin features the Shoshone guide, Sacagawea. She is carrying her child, Jean-Babtiste, on her back. Her hair is pulled back, and she wears a native-style earring and cloak. Goodacre’s initials, “GG,” are on the cloak.
Curving along the rim at the top is “Liberty.”
On the left-hand side is “In God We Trust.”
To the right of Sacagawea is the year “2000.”
Below the year is the mint mark. A “P” is for coins from Philadelphia. A “D” is for coins from Denver. An “S” is for all proof-strike versions from San Francisco.

The Coin’s Reverse Side
The center of the 2000 gold dollar’s reverse side features a soaring eagle facing left.
Above its head is America’s motto, “E Pluribus Unum.” This is Latin for “Out of many, one.”
Circling the coin’s rim at the top is “United States of America” and at the bottom “One Dollar.” On the inside of these words are 13 stars. The stars represent how many states there were during the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
